Description:

Cefalotin is also known as cephalothin sodium.Cefalotin or cephalothin is a first-generation cephalosporin antibiotic.It was the first cephalosporin marketed (1964) and continues to be widely used. It is an intravenously administered agent with a similar antimicrobial spectrum to cefazolin and the oral agent cefalexin.

Indications and Usage:

Using this drug alone is eligible for the treatment of such infections caused by the sensitive organism as: Upper and lower respiratory tract infection, upper and lower urinary tract infection, peritonitis, cholecystitis, cholangitis, cholangeitis and other intra-abdominal infection,hematosepsis, meningitis, cutaneous and soft tissue infection, bone marrow and joint infection, pelvic inflammation, endometritis, gonorrhea and other genital tract infections. Drug combination: When it is taken together with amino glycoside antibiotic, should monitoring the patient's renal function.

Pharmacodynamics :

Cefalotin (INN) or cephalothin (USAN) is a semisynthetic first generation cephalosporin having a broad spectrum of antibiotic activity that is administered parenterally.
 

Mechanism of action :

The bactericidal activity of cefalotin results from the inhibition of cell wall synthesis via affinity for penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs). The PBPs are transpeptidases which are vital in peptidoglycan biosynthesis. Therefore, their inhibition prevents this vital cell wall compenent from being properly synthesized.
