Description :

Tropisetron is a serotonin 5-HT3 receptor antagonist used mainly as an antiemetic to treat nausea and vomiting following chemotherapy, although it has been used experimentally as an analgesic in cases of fibromyalgia. The drug is available in 2 mg and 5 mg intravenous form.

 

Pharmacology :

Tropisetron acts as both a selective 5-HT3 receptor antagonist and α7-nicotinic receptor agonist.

 

Adverse effects :

Tropisetron is a well-tolerated drug with few side effects. Headache, constipation, and dizziness are the most commonly reported side effects associated with its use. Hypotension, transient liver enzyme elevation, immune hypersensitivity syndromes and extrapyramidal side effects have also been associated with its use on at least one occasion.There have been no significant drug interactions reported with this drug's use. It is broken down by the hepatic cytochrome P450 system and it has little effect on the metabolism of other drugs broken down by this system.

 

Do not have Tropisetron Hydrochloride and Sodium Chloride Injection if you have ever had an allergy to:

tropisetron (the active ingredient in Tropisetron)

any of the other ingredients listed at the end of this leaflet

similar medicines such as ondansetron and dolasetron

Some of the symptoms of an allergic reaction may include shortness of breath, wheezing or difficulty breathing; swelling of the face, lips, tongue or other parts of the body; rash, itching or hives on the skin.

Do not have Tropisetron if you are pregnant.

There is not enough information to recommend its use during pregnancy.

Do not breast-feed while you are having Tropisetron.

It is not known if the active ingredient in Tropisetron passes into breast milk and could affect your baby.

Do not have Tropisetron after the expiry date printed on the pack or if the packaging is torn or shows signs of tampering.
